What is Spinach?

Great vegan food is everywhere. Finding it is the hard part.

Spinach is quality-first discovery for exceptional vegan food, wherever it's served. We find it, grade it honestly, and show you what's worth ordering — across an app and a city guide.

The problem

Half of new vegans quit within the first year. Not because the ethics change — because finding good vegan food is hard. The information is bad, the great places are unevenly rated, and the best dishes are hiding in plain sight.

For every fully vegan restaurant there are roughly fifteen places with vegan options, and that's where most of the great food lives. A normal bistro with one extraordinary plant-based plate. A ramen shop whose vegan bowl outclasses dedicated vegan spots. None of it surfaces when you only look at the fully-vegan list.

What Spinach is

Quality-first discovery for exceptional vegan food, anywhere it's served. Not a directory of every vegan-friendly café — a guide to where the food is actually good. We rank by quality and grade for friction, so you know two things before you walk in: is the food worth it, and how easy is it to eat vegan here.

It's an app and a guide reading the same data. The mobile app and these pages compute from one source of truth, so a venue at #1 on the app is the same #1 here. No divergence, no separate edits.

How we grade

Every venue carries two scores that answer two different questions.

★ Spinach rating

How good the food is. A quality score derived from review language, confidence-bounded so a single 5-star rating doesn't outrank a 4.6 with two hundred reviews. This is the question of whether it's worth your time.

A–E Vegan Friendliness

How easy it is to eat vegan there. A single letter — A through E — computed from menu labelling, vegan options, staff knowledge, and warnings. It's a friction signal, not a quality signal.

Both are cross-referenced from reviews and menus, computed daily, and never pay-to-play. Ranks are not for sale — no promoted slots, no partner boosts. If a venue is on a list, it earned the spot.

Coverage

245,000+ venues across 106 countries, with 158 curated city guides for the places people actually travel and eat. Lists are computed daily — the order you see is today's data, not a snapshot from last year.

The point

Better discovery rewards the restaurants doing vegan food well. Reward creates incentive. Incentive means more great plant-based food, in more places. The long arc is simple: every restaurant in the world with vegan options worth ordering. The app is how we start.
