Kreuzberg became a centre for squatters and alternative movements. Across Berlin, immigration and an appetite for unconventional living helped meat-free cooking grow, from kebab shops to Cookies Cream's vegetarian fine dining.

London's vegan restaurants share a history with Soho's late nights and international tastes.

Cranks made vegetarian eating fashionable on Carnaby Street after opening in 1961; its restaurants have since closed. Nearby, Mildreds began feeding Soho residents and night owls on Greek Street; it later expanded across London and made its international menu fully vegan.

Melbourne's vegetarian history grew through a volunteer kitchen, returning travellers and university life.

Shakahari opened in Carlton in 1972 with volunteer staff. Returning travellers sought its Asian cooking, and nearby Melbourne University helped it grow; writers, actors and academics spread the word. The restaurant has since closed.

New York's vegan history runs from wholefood kitchens to punk comfort food.

Angelica Kitchen in the East Village built its menu around grains and greens, while Brooklyn's Foodswings served comfort food. Food writer Alicia Kennedy identifies these now-closed restaurants with the hippie and punk strands of the city's vegan dining.

Barcelona's meat-free restaurants have roots in the city's movement for healthier, more sustainable living.

Biocenter grew out of Vida Sana, a movement that connected food with health and environmental care. Teresa do Carmo opened the restaurant in 1980, and her daughters later joined her, turning that early commitment into a family business.

At TIAN, Paul Ivić works with seasonal vegetables, using roots, leaves and peels alongside regional varieties that have fallen from favour. Velani takes a different route through Austrian cooking, adapting familiar dishes into an entirely plant-based menu.

Portland's vegan community built places to shop, eat and gather around its punk roots.

Chad Miller and Emiko Badillo learnt about animal rights through punk records and zines. Tired of hunting down suitable food, they opened Food Fight grocery and helped found the city's vegan mini-mall, with a bakery, a clothing shop and a tattoo studio. The grocery has since moved to Gateway.

Janet and Mac Henderson opened their food shop in 1962, with a vegetarian restaurant following it. After the original business closed during the pandemic, their grandson Barrie reopened Hendersons in Tollcross with former staff.

How we measure

  1. Count places that have great food and are vegan-friendly.
  2. Calculate density per capita. Great places per 100,000 residents.
  3. Goalposts. Both count and density are measured against goalposts: 14 to 365 great places, and 1 to 20 per 100,000 residents. Below the low post a city gets no points, at the high post it gets them all, and each doubling in between is worth the same.
  4. Combine the count with density.
    • 75% comes from the count
    • 25% comes from per capita density
  5. The combined score is out of 100 points.

Which is the best city in the world for vegans?

Berlin. It scores 95 out of 100, with 391 great places for vegans, 10.8 for every 100,000 residents.

Why is Berlin ahead of London?

Both pass 365 great places, where the count is full, so density decides: Berlin has 10.8 great places per 100,000 residents, London 8.7. London has more in total, 854 to 391. It's close: their likely ranks overlap.

Does a bigger city always win?

No. The count is full at 365 great places, and 25% of the score is per resident. Edinburgh, with about 550,000 residents, is 9th.

Do you only count vegan restaurants?

No. Any place counts with a Spinach Food Score of 4.5 or higher, backed by enough agreeing reviews that one rave can't do it, and a Spinach Vegan Friendliness Index of A or B. Fully vegan places get no bonus.

What does "likely 1st to 5th" mean?

We reran the ranking 2,000 times with realistic noise in the counts, ratings and residents. A city's likely rank is where it landed in the middle 90% of those runs. Scores are rounded to whole points; cities are ranked on the unrounded score.

How do you pick what each city does best?

Dishes reviewers name in the city far more often than elsewhere, and rate highly. Where a city has too few such sweets, we add sweets reviewers rate highly at 3 or more places. Each dish opens a list of where to get it.

Can a place pay to be listed?

No. Nobody pays to be on a Spinach list or in this ranking.

Why is my city missing?

We show the top 100. A city needs at least 150 places and 200,000 residents to be scored.
