Berlin didn't become the vegan capital by accident. Decades of squatter culture, leftist politics, and cheap rent created space for experimentation—and that spirit landed on the plate.

The scene skews casual. Cookies Cream is vegetarian with a Michelin star, but the soul lives in neighborhood spots—Vietnamese kitchens in Friedrichshain, falafel counters in Neukölln, bakeries that don't bother mentioning everything's vegan because of course it is.

Skip the tourist traps in Mitte. Head east. Expect hearty portions, zero pretense, and prices that let you eat out daily.

More vegan döner shops than most cities have vegan restaurants, period.
Where to go: Friedrichshain for Vietnamese, Neukölln for Middle Eastern, Kreuzberg for everything in between. Prenzlauer Berg if you're with kids.

London's vegan scene runs on ambition. This is where plant-based fine dining grew up—Gauthier converting to full vegan in 2021, Plates earning the UK's first vegan Michelin star. But it's also where a £5 dosa can change your life.

The diversity is staggering. Proper vegan fish and chips that would fool any chippy regular. South Indian dosas that draw queues around the block. Pies so good they've converted carnivores. Every cuisine on earth, veganized—often by immigrants who've been cooking plant-based forever.

Don't chase the Instagram spots. The best meals hide in Brick Lane curry houses, Middle Eastern spots in Dalston, and Caribbean joints in Brixton.

Fish and chips that fool any regular, dosas that draw queues—every cuisine, veganized.
Where to go: Shoreditch for trendy, Brixton for Caribbean, Brick Lane for curry. Soho if you're splashing out.

Barcelona's vegan scene lives in the shadow of jamón culture—which makes its success all the more impressive. The city that perfected cured pork now has some of Europe's best plant-based tapas.

The Catalan approach helps: fresh produce worship, Mediterranean technique, and a general "why not?" attitude toward dietary choices. The patatas bravas are crispy and properly spiced, the croquetas rich and creamy, the churros dunked in thick chocolate. Gràcia leads the charge with neighborhood joints that feel like someone's living room.

Avoid Las Ramblas like the plague. El Born for hip, Gràcia for authentic, Poble Sec for tapas crawls. And yes, ordering vegan paella will get you looks, but it's worth it.

Patatas bravas, croquetas, churros—tapas done right, no jamón required.
Where to go: Gràcia for neighborhood gems, El Born for trendy, Poble Sec for tapas crawls. Barceloneta only for the beach.

Portland wears its vegan-friendliness so casually it barely mentions it. The farm-to-table ethos runs deep here—local, seasonal, plant-forward has been the default long before it was trendy.

Food carts started it all. A city where a $9 Burmese lunch from a cart rivals sit-down restaurants anywhere. Weekend brunch means tofu scrambles piled high; afternoons mean soft serve that rivals any dairy original; evenings mean mac and cheese that'll make you forget the box ever existed. The fine dining exists (Astera is genuinely world-class), but the heart beats in food pods and neighborhood diners.

Forget downtown. The inner eastside—Division, Hawthorne, Alberta—is where you want to be. Cash-only spots, chefs who actually care, and zero attitude.

Scrambles, soft serve, mac and cheese—comfort food is the Portland love language.
Where to go: Division Street for food carts, Alberta for brunch, Hawthorne for dinner. Mississippi for the weirdest (best) finds.

A decade ago, vegan Paris meant undressed salad leaves and sympathetic shrugs. The city that invented haute cuisine simply didn't do plant-based. That's ancient history now—Paris leads European capitals for vegan restaurants per capita.

The transformation came fast. The crepes are properly Breton, the tarts perfectly flaky, the quiche rich enough to fool any Parisian grandmother. VG Pâtisserie opened in 2017 and proved vegan patisserie could rival any traditional boulangerie. Afro-Caribbean spots like Jah-Jah started as food bikes in 2014 and grew into proper restaurants.

Skip the 1st arrondissement tourist traps. The Marais has the classics, but the 11th has the soul. Canal Saint-Martin for brunch, Pigalle for late nights. Bring your appetite and your best French shrug.

Crepes, tarts, quiche—French patisserie without compromise.

New York doesn't do anything small, including vegan food. From omakase sushi near Times Square to Punjabi dhabas in Jackson Heights, the range is genuinely overwhelming—and so are the prices.

Manhattan has the famous names, but the boroughs have the soul. Queens alone has more vegan diversity than most countries—the dosas in Jackson Heights rival anything in Chennai. Brooklyn's been doing plant-based brunch since before Instagram existed. And yes, you can get a proper bagel with vegan cream cheese that doesn't taste like compromise.

Don't eat in Times Square. Ever. The West Village for date night, Flushing for Asian, Williamsburg for brunch and mac and cheese that actually delivers.

Dosas that rival Chennai, bagels that don't compromise—Queens alone outranks most countries.
Where to go: West Village for dates, Jackson Heights for South Asian, Williamsburg for brunch. Chinatown for budget feasts.

LA didn't wait for the vegan trend—it started one. Follow Your Heart has served hippie-style plant-based since 1970. Crossroads Kitchen proved in 2013 that vegan fine dining could compete with any steakhouse. Now LA residents eat plant-based 187% more than the national average.

The scene sprawls like the city itself. West Hollywood has the celebrity-chef spots; Little Ethiopia has the injera spreads that'll wreck you for Ethiopian anywhere else. Track down the pupuserías—Salvadoran stuffed corn cakes that might be LA's most underrated vegan find. Thai Town delivers pad see ew worth the drive. And yes, even the In-N-Out imitation—Mr. Charlie's—is worth the joke.

Don't waste time in Hollywood proper. Silver Lake for the scene, Koreatown for late night, Venice if you're into wellness vibes.

Hamburg flies under the radar, and locals like it that way. Germany's second city has Berlin's vegan density without the hype—and none of the pretense.

The port city history shows in the food: hearty, unpretentious, built for people who work with their hands. Start your day with a vegan franzbrötchen—Hamburg's signature cinnamon pastry that puts any croissant to shame. Schanzenviertel is the epicenter, where punk bars serve surprisingly good currywurst and döner joints outnumber chains.

Skip the Reeperbahn tourist zone. The real food lives in Sternschanze and St. Pauli, where the rent is (slightly) lower and the creativity higher.

Lisbon snuck up on the vegan world. While everyone was watching Berlin and London, this sun-drenched city on the Atlantic quietly became one of Europe's most plant-friendly destinations.

The Food Temple opened in Mouraria in 2011 as one of Lisbon's first all-vegan spots—proof that even a city famous for bacalhau could adapt. Now there's Kong reimagining Portuguese classics without fish, Arkhe serving Michelin-starred innovation, and Vegan Nata perfecting the impossible: a proper pastel de nata without egg.

Avoid the Rossio tourist zone. Chiado has the polish, but Anjos has the creativity—a hip neighborhood where €10 buys a feast. Mouraria for tradition, Intendente for edge. And always, always save room for natas.

Amsterdam's tolerance extends to the plate. A city built on trade has always absorbed global influences—Indonesian rijsttafel, Surinamese roti, Middle Eastern mezze—and the vegan versions often outshine the originals.

The canal district looks pretty but eats boring. Push out to De Pijp for the Albert Cuyp market, to Noord for post-industrial cool, to Oost for Surinamese and Turkish home cooking that happens to be plant-based.

Skip the tourist cafés in the center. Even traditional spots are adapting—vegan bitterballen have become standard across the city. Rent a bike—you'll need it to eat this widely.

How We Rank Cities

We answer one question: "Where can I easily find excellent vegan food?"

What We Measure

Accessibility — How many vegan-friendly venues exist? We count places rated B+ for vegan options (clear labeling, good variety, knowledgeable staff).

Quality — How many are actually good? We count venues rated 4.5+ stars for food quality.

Count vs Density

Each dimension combines total count (70%) and per-capita density (30%).

Why weight count higher? Research shows variety matters roughly twice as much as concentration. A city with 300 great venues beats one with 50—even if the smaller city has more per resident.

How Scores Work

We use logarithmic scaling because going from 10 to 100 venues transforms your experience, but 500 to 600 barely matters. Cities must score well on both accessibility and quality—each contributes half the final score, so you can't hide mediocre food behind sheer volume. Density uses effective population: metro residents plus average daily tourists—so Paris's 44M annual visitors count toward the people those venues serve.
